Summary: Product developers benefit from a best-in-class SDN technology virtualized platform, while service providers increase service flexibility, lower costs and can create new subscriber plans.
Paris, France, 9 September 2014 – Qosmos®, the market leader in embedded Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and network intelligence technology for use in physical, SDN and NFV architectures, is showcasing a joint demo with Intel and Wind River at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco September 9 – 11th.
The demo shows dynamically optimized service chaining, made possible by DPI software embedded directly in the SDN infrastructure. Technically, a Qosmos SAM® DPI module integrated with the Intel® Open Network Platform Server Reference Design (Intel® ONP Server Reference Design) using Wind River software that analyses traffic in real time and conveys application information to a vSwitch which intelligently steers traffic to optimize the number and sequence (chain) of service functions. The benefits for service providers include increased flexibility in the deployment of service (firewalls, load balancers, WAN optimization, etc.), the ability to create new types of customized subscriber plans, and significant CAPEX and OPEX savings. Product developers using the Intel ONP Server Reference Design featuring Wind River software, including Wind River Linux and Open Virtualization, and Qosmos SAM are able to leverage comprehensive middleware software with integrated packet acceleration and DPI technologies.
“Together with Qosmos, we’re demonstrating new possibilities to optimize product development and service delivery thanks to the combination of Wind River software in the Intel ONP Server Reference Design and advanced DPI technology from Qosmos,” said Ricky Watts, General Manager of Switching Solutions at Wind River.
“Network intelligence in the form of DPI and related technologies are quickly becoming essential functionality inside the infrastructure of new networks based on SDN and NFV”, said Jerome Tollet, CTO at Qosmos. “Qosmos SAM provides the detailed, real-time traffic understanding required for intelligent service chaining”.
With the introduction of virtualization, network overlays, and orchestration, network operators struggle with service functions such as firewalls, load balancers, WAN optimization systems, and other value-added services (VAS). Services are typically implemented in a static chain leading to technical and organizational challenges involving significant modification to the network management. Service functions implemented in silos lead to higher OPEX due to duplicated functionalities (network data interpretation, security rules, application classification, etc.).
The Intel ONP Reference Design based on Wind River reference software platform, demonstrates the capability of next generation SDN. The platform integrates SDN capability through an ODL interface and dynamic service chaining, linking virtual appliances from Riverbed, Intel Security (McAfee) and brocade. The integration of Qosmos allows us to make service chaining decisions to reroute, tag, or take other actions based on deep packet inspection.
Qosmos Service Aware Module (Qosmos SAM) technology, running on hypervisor-hosted platforms based on Intel® Xeon® processors, allows DPI functions to be performed locally and enables dynamic traffic steering according to Layer 7 policy and rules. As an example, the virtual switch can directly steer video traffic by bypassing a next-generation firewall virtual network function (VNF).
The Qosmos and Wind River service chaining demo will be shown at booth # 904 at IDF from September 9 – 11th.
