An Application Delivery Network (ADN) is a suite of technologies enabling application availability, security, visibility, and acceleration. An ADN consists of WAN Optimization Controllers (WOCs) and Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs). These systems now need application awareness and detailed service intelligence, in order to handle an explosion of multiple classes of services between data centers, due to an increase in cloud-based services and trends such as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).
As an example, ADNs must isolate types of traffic flow (like video streaming) to apply the specific optimization (like compression) associated with the traffic type.
