The Perfect Storm

We are at the beginning of 2011 and everything seems to be calm. But if you could look over the Network Intelligence horizon, you would see that a perfect storm is brewing. You would see that three game-changing megatrends are combining and reinforcing each other to accelerate the adoption of Network Intelligence technology.

Megatrend 1: Exponential increase in broadband wireless communication
The massive adoption of smartphones and wireless laptop PCs is putting pressure on mobile networks and services, which increases the need for network optimization and service assurance. As a result, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and Network Intelligence (NI) technology have become essential in telecoms and in particular for the transition to next generation mobile networks based on LTE. You can read more about this in the newly published white paper by Heavy Reading: "The New DPI: Challenges & Opportunities in the LTE Era".

Megatrend 2: Necessity to protect citizens and network assets
Physical and cyber worlds are becoming more complex and more dangerous. Governments need detailed traffic visibility to identify criminals communicating over the Internet and protect citizens. Sensitive government and utility networks can only be defended by using sophisticated cyber defense solutions based on network intelligence: think of the latest generation malware like Aurora, Zeus and Stuxnet. Vendors of cyber security products require application-level visibility brought by NI to strengthen solutions such as Firewalls, IDS and Network Forensics.

Megatrend 3: DPI and NI technology are no longer developed in-house
In addition to the need for DPI and NI described in the first two megatrends, there is a clear paradigm shift from first generation "Do It Yourself DPI" to sourcing of "Next Generation DPI/NI technology" from specialist vendors such as Qosmos. The reasons are obvious: by leveraging ready-to-use decoding software, engineers dramatically shorten time-to-market and can focus on developing solutions, instead of enabling technology. They get instant access to 1,000+ application protocols and 4,500+ communications metadata and benefit from continuous updates by Qosmos.

Let's work together to make 2011 a successful year of partnership!

Application Spotlight: Defending Against Attacks 2.0

We have entered the era of "Cyber Attacks 2.0". Operation Aurora, Zeus, and Stuxnet are all part of new generation malware, which evaded existing security products, were engineered by highly skilled programmers and showed that traditional security approaches are no longer sufficient for effective protection.

In partnership with the recent Cyber Warfare event organized by IQPC, Qosmos has recorded a webinar on how to use DPI and Network Intelligence to strengthen cyber defense, with the following content:

  • The challenges of government cyber defense
  • Detecting cyber threats by scanning traffic
  • Using DPI & Network Intelligence to build a second line of cyber defense
  • Leveraging communication metadata to detect suspicious traffic
  • Examples of deployments

Qosmos ixMachine LI Edition: Upgraded Packages

Qosmos ixMachine LI Edition probes contain new, upgraded, packages to enable the collection of data for Lawful Interception as defined by ETSI standards. This includes interception based on network identifiers contained in the IP, Radius, DHCP and GTP protocols. The probe also contains modules for email and VoIP interception. Beyond standardized protocols, Qosmos ixM LI Edition proposes modules to intercept next generation IP-based services including Instant Messaging and File transfer. Additional modules include keyword search and Data Retention. Several new modules will be released in 2011 including webmails, and SMS/MMS.
